From Design to Delivery: A Practical Guide to Quality Checking

From Design to Delivery: A Practical Guide to Quality Checking
From Design to Delivery: A Practical Guide to Quality Checking

A design can look finished and still have things that need fixing.

A link might point to the wrong page. An image could be too low-resolution. A date might be incorrect. Or the artwork might have been exported using the wrong dimensions or file format.

These details can be easy to miss, especially after spending hours working on the same design.

That's why, here at XEN Create, we use a graphic design quality checklist as part of our design process. It gives our team a simple, repeatable way to step back from the creative work and check the details before a design is delivered, published or sent to production.

Good design is more than how it looks

When reviewing a design, it's easy to focus primarily on the visual side: Does the layout work? Is the hierarchy clear? Does everything feel balanced?

But a design that looks great isn't necessarily ready to go.

There are plenty of other details to check, such as:

  • Are the dimensions correct?
  • Is all the content accurate?
  • Are links working properly?
  • Are images high enough resolution?
  • Does the design follow the brand guidelines?
  • Is the correct colour mode being used?
  • Has the artwork been exported in the right format?

These aren't always things you'll notice by simply looking at the overall design. They need to be checked deliberately.

That's why a final quality check isn't just about asking, “Does this look good?” It's also about making sure the design is accurate, on-brand and technically ready for its intended use.

A consistent process helps catch the small details

After working on the same design for an extended period, even obvious issues can become easier to overlook.

We already know what the headline is supposed to say, where each element is meant to sit and how the finished design should look. This familiarity can make it harder to spot small mistakes with a quick final glance.

A few simple habits can help:

  • Take a short break before completing the final review.
  • Check the design at 100% size to review the finer details.
  • Zoom out or view it as a thumbnail to check the overall hierarchy.
  • Review the actual exported file, not just the working file.
  • Have another team member take a fresh look where appropriate.
  • Use a checklist rather than relying on memory.

Having a defined process gives our designers something concrete to work through before a design is considered complete.

It also helps us maintain a consistent standard across different designers, projects and deliverables; whether we're creating a social media graphic, presentation, website asset or print design.

Catching issues before they become bigger problems

Small mistakes are usually much easier to fix while a design is still being reviewed.

A typo in a working file might take seconds to correct. The same typo becomes a much bigger issue once an email has been sent, a social post has been published or hundreds of brochures have been printed.

A quality checklist creates one final checkpoint before the design reaches that stage.

It doesn't replace design judgement or the review process. Instead, it helps make sure the practical details haven't been overlooked while we're focussed on the bigger picture.

What we check before delivering a design

At XEN Create, we've organised our graphic design quality checks into five key areas:

1. Brief & Brand

We check that the design follows the original brief, client instructions, brand guidelines and any supplied references or inspiration.

2. Design & Layout

We review visual hierarchy, spacing, alignment, typography, readability and overall consistency to make sure the design communicates clearly and feels polished.

3. Content

We check copy, spelling, important details and links to make sure the content is accurate and no placeholders or temporary content remain.

4. File Setup & Export

We check practical requirements such as dimensions, resolution, colour mode, file format and any platform or print-specific requirements.

5. Final Check & Delivery

Finally, we review the exported file itself to make sure everything appears as expected and that the correct version is ready for delivery.

Following the same process each time helps us review the work systematically rather than relying on memory or a quick final glance.

Quality checking doesn't need to make the design process complicated. A simple, consistent checklist can help catch small issues before they reach your audience.

We've put together the XEN Create Graphic Design Quality Checklist, based on the checks our team uses when reviewing design work.
